Its gorgeous foliage comes in many varieties, and it’ll periodically curl and drop old leaves to make way for new ones so that it’s always looking its very best.These plants focus mostly on keeping their leaves big and beautiful, so you’ll notice new ones coming in all the time. It can grow up to five feet once it’s fully mature!Lighting:Bright, indirect light.Water:Watering twice a week is a good habit for this plant. It likes for its soil to be kept moist, as it is growing all the time. As per usual, make sure the soil is draining and not holding any standing water.Soil/Potting:Plant in a well draining soil in a container with a drainage hole and made of slightly porous material like ceramic or sealed concrete. Repot annually or when plant exhibits discoloration without the presence of any mis-watering habits.Fertilize:Monthly with bacterial inoculant recommended for steady growth and to promote richer coloration in the foliage.Temperature:Room temp (55-85 degrees is ideal), protect from harsh fluctuations in temperature particularly in the winterToxicity:There are lots of stories about how Dieffenbachia is a deadly poison, but don’t fret. This plant does have calcium oxalate crystals that can cause swelling/numbing in the mouth or excessive drooling if ingested (earning it the common name “dumb cane”, since it can leave you temporarily unable to speak), but it’s far from life threatening. You’d have to hold it in your throat for quite some time for it to be truly harmful, and even then it’s more like a very sore throat once removed.This probably goes without saying, but don’t eat it just to see if it really does cause an inability to speak!
